Excursion with the first-year Master students

excursion

Excursion with the first-year Master students has been organized by APMG-Group in November 14-16, 2017, in Berlin, Germany

In November 2017, about 40 students attended an excursion to Berlin as part of the master programme „Geodäsie und Geoinformation“. The first major stop was the Geoforschungszentrum (GFZ) Potsdam, where we were given a guided tour to explore the whole institution located at the Telegrafenberg, followed by interesting talks about different aspects of geodesy that are investigated at GFZ. The highlights have been the possibility for a close-up view of the Big Refractor, a telescope built in 1899, and the satellite-laser-ranging station operated by GFZ. On the next day, we visited the Observatory for Magnetism in Niemegk, where data has been collected on the Earth's interior as well as the near-Earth space since 1930. The students had the opportunity to examine the instruments for measuring the Earth's magnetic field. During our stay in Berlin, we have been guided through the prison in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen, which was operated by the “Staatssicherheit” during the DDR regime and served to detain political prisoners; some contemporary witnesses reported on their experiences during their imprisonment.
